I've been doing this style of artwork on smaller pieces for a while - those are the backbone of the designs for lifestyle products over on Society 6 - phone cases and leggings with original art printed on, anyone?
 
Wondering how that style might look on a bigger scale, led to his piece. It has a textured gesso ground, with acrylic paint and pen detailing. A little metallic gold ink danced into it to jazz it up a touch.
